Never run out of storage space again! Samsung begins mass production of 512GB chips for phones and tablets

Samsung claims its 512GB chip reads and writes data at 86MB per second and 255MB per second - eight times faster than a micro-SD card
If you’re feeling ultra swaggy for bagging yourself a shiny new iPhone X or Samsung Galaxy S8 with a massive 256GB of storage, and you still feel like that’s not enough, you’re in luck.

Samsung has announced it has begun mass production of 512GB embedded Universal Flash Storage chips, designed for next-generation phones and tablets.


Samsung’s all-new 512GB chips have eight 64-layer 512GB V-NAND chips all stacked on top of each other, as well as a controller chip to top it all off. The chips have double the amount of storage capacity of the current top model Samsung Galaxy S8 while still managing to fit into handset models of the same size.

Additionally, the 512GB flash storage chip can both read and write data at 86MB per second and 255MB per second, a reported eight times faster than a standard micro-SD card.


In terms of energy and power, Samsung has introduced new proprietary technology to make sure the chips feature a new circuit design to maximise energy efficiency and performance. A smartphone which houses a 512GB storage chip can store 130 video clips filmed in 4K Ultra-HD lasting ten minutes long. This means that, in theory, you could film multiple feature length films and have them all stored on your phone. The new Samsung 512GB eUFS provides the best embedded storage solution for next generation premium smartphones by overcoming potential limitations in system performance that can occur with the use of Micro-SD cards,” Jaesoo Han, Executive VP of Memory Sales Marketing at Samsung Electronics, said.

“By assuring an early stable supply of this advanced embedded storage, Samsung is taking a big step forward in contributing to timely launches of next generation mobile devices by mobile manufacturers around the world.”

The 512GB chips are intended to be used in the next generation of smartphones, hinting that we might be seeing Samsung Galaxy devices or even other major smartphones, like the iPhone – which uses Samsung for the production of memory chips – with huge storage sizes (and likely, prices) in the future.
